What? Violin technique workshops

At the invitation of Kathryn Doehner (German violinist, founder of the folk camp “Ethno Germany” and the folk project “Folklang”), we conducted five day workshops of violin technique for local violinists at the end of February. The emphasis this time was on the production of a beautiful tone (contact points, bow posture), changing strings, motoric functions of the fingers of the left hand (independent horizontal, ventricular and lateral movement of the finger), natural posture and independence of the body pulse from performance movements.

This time, the mentor at the short ‘last minute’ workshop will be Wouter Vandenabeele, a Belgian multi-genre violinist, composer and teacher. He is the co-founder of the ‘Fiddlers on the move’ festival in Ghent. Quite some members of Godalkanje are going to the coming festival to participate on workshops with mentors from various countries. Wouter is the founder of the Ola Vogal World Music Orchestra and many other projects that bring together music from different nations and continents. Lately he has also been performing a lot with the African band Tamala. Wouter leads music workshops in various countries. This time, he will present dance tunes from Central and Western Europe. He will also show the connections between traditional dances and musical forms which were primarily intended for dancing.

The musical experience is the most we can do for the musical education of our toddlers. Leader of music activities Bojan Cvetrežnik conducts workshops with exceptional patience and humor, mostly with string instruments. Occasionally visiting mentors will invite children into the world of music with natural approaches that especially attract them. We will sing Slovenian folk and children’s songs and perform the rhythm. Whatever lies around us can be used as a musical instrument – and we are not even afraid of “smart” instruments.

Tunes with Improvisation group workshop will build upon the repertoire of attractive melodies from various treasure troves of music for string instruments. We will adhere to the “from practice to theory” principle and take some time every second workshop to theoretically break down the tunes and provide exercises for structured improvisation on their individual parts or for using shapes from these tunes in improvisation on a different repertoire.

The workshop can also be attended via Skype.

There will be two major sets of special Godalkanje workshops in the 2017/18 season:

The Special Courses are the initiative of Godalkanje.org open source music education in Slovenia. It is a part of the One Music Society activities that are orientated towards sound ecology, equal rights for different music styles and run new economy experiments with music production. Godalkanje courses take place since 2010 with the intention to present as much diversity as possible in order to give string players a lot of opportunities for further investigation.
Each major violin folk movement (Celtic, Scandinavian, Balkan, Slavic, Romanian, Latin, Alp region…) has hundreds of different violin styles inside, even on very small territories. If we add this to hundreds of years of written music in classical music, traditional and contemporary jazz violin, rock and electronic music, it would be extremely difficult to find a better symbol for the European musical diversity than the violin is.
The courses are mostly run by playing ‘all together’ and with a strong intention to perform publicly as soon as possible. This year, two of the five workshops will be held regularly once every two weeks. At each session, a new tune (viža) will be on the agenda. Intermediate workshops will serve as a learning opportunity for improvising on the given tune. A smaller group of participants uses the repertoire of the courses for group playing or performing with their groups outside Special Courses. All fears about how the integration with the new worlds will turn out must immediately be eliminated.
