This time, the mentor at the short ‘last minute’ workshop will be Wouter Vandenabeele, a Belgian multi-genre violinist, composer and teacher. He is the co-founder of the ‘Fiddlers on the move’ festival in Ghent. Quite some members of Godalkanje are going to the coming festival to participate on workshops with mentors from various countries. Wouter is the founder of the Ola Vogal World Music Orchestra and many other projects that bring together music from different nations and continents. Lately he has also been performing a lot with the African band Tamala. Wouter leads music workshops in various countries. This time, he will present dance tunes from Central and Western Europe. He will also show the connections between traditional dances and musical forms which were primarily intended for dancing.

The musical experience is the most we can do for the musical education of our toddlers. Leader of music activities Bojan Cvetrežnik conducts workshops with exceptional patience and humor, mostly with string instruments. Occasionally visiting mentors will invite children into the world of music with natural approaches that especially attract them. We will sing Slovenian folk and children’s songs and perform the rhythm. Whatever lies around us can be used as a musical instrument – and we are not even afraid of “smart” instruments.

Who can attend? Players of all ages, in particular students attending secondary music school or the academy, teachers of string instruments and those who finished primary music school. Minimal requirements: thorough understanding of the program for the 6th grade of primary music school.

Mentors: Bojan Cvetrežnik and Barja Drnovšek.

Tunes with Improvisation group workshop will build upon the repertoire of attractive melodies from various treasure troves of music for string instruments. We will adhere to the “from practice to theory” principle and take some time every second workshop to theoretically break down the tunes and provide exercises for structured improvisation on their individual parts or for using shapes from these tunes in improvisation on a different repertoire.

The workshop can also be attended via Skype.

All students enrolled in Hobi Godalkanje 2017/18 can attend Autumn Godalkanje FREE OF CHARGE.

Autumn Godalkanje

Who can attend? Attendees will join one of the two groups. First Group – Hobby level: thorough understanding of the program for 3rd grade of music school. Second Group – Special level: thorough understanding of the program for 6th grade of music school.
Final concert: November 5th 2017, Festival Hall, Ljubljana

Mentors:

Kate Young (Scotland): Celtic music, various special “chops” techniques, how to accompany vocals on the violin and everything else that Kate has up her sleeve.

Claudia Schwab (Austria): a broad spectre ranging from Austro-Celtic music to far-away India, spiced-up with Claudia’s unmatched approach.

Bojan Cvetrežnik (Slovenia): group workshops for children. Playing by ear, improvisation, how to do away with nervousness, how to accompany melodies on string instruments, pulse of the group etc.

Group workshops are open to all players of string instruments, whether they be students attending primary/secondary music school or the academy, teachers of string instruments themselves or musicians with a degree. Workshops will be organized on two levels and all three mentors will give lessons on both of them.

Special courses – Barja Drnovšek – BALFOLK

Who: 

Barja Drnovšek graduated at the Carinthian State Conservatorium with Prof Helfried Fister and obtained her master’s degree from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana with Prof Gorjan Košuta.

While pursuing her studies, she found folk music intriguing, which led her to attend various workshops and folk camps (Etno Histeria, Trad. Lockenhaus music workshop etc.). In addition to classical orchestras (SFK Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Jeunesse Orchester, Arseia String Orchestra, MLS, Junge Philharmonie Wien etc.), she has been increasingly engaged in a number of ensembles that play folk music (Symbolic Orchestra, Terrafolk, Ida&Other Bears, Grad gori!, a duet with Bojan Cvetrežnik, Svetlana Makarovič, Baraka etc.). Soon, however, this activity became a profession and she quit her job at a public school and became a freelance musician and a music teacher. She teaches violin and other instruments and holds workshops as part of the educational programmes of the ONE Music Society. In addition, Drnovšek takes part in theatre and puppet performances and works as a session musician recording music for films, cartoons and pop musicians.

What:

BALFOLK

Explore folk dances from those European countries where dancing is part of everyday life, where people do not wear traditional costumes and do not dance to “perform” but rather out of pure joy – everyone, young and old. You will make a journey to France, Italy and Belgium, through Scandinavia and to the Balkans, and learn about the music and the basic steps for the mazurka, schottish, circle circassien, kolo, polska, hanter dro, chapelloise and others. Expand your repertoire with tunes that can inspire our pupils as well as our classical performances. If we play them around the world, someone will definitely move their feet at some point.

Special courses – Bojan Cvetrežnik – TRAINING FOR VIOLIN TEACHERS

When: 4–6 March 2016

Who: 

Bojan Cvetrežnik studied classical music. He obtained his degree in viola performance in the class of prof. Mile Kosi and improved his knowledge in Klagenfurt and Berlin as well as on master classes (with Helfried Fister, Kim Kashkashian, Diemut Poppen, Tabea Zimmermann, Laszlo Barshony, Carol Rodland, Hartmud Rhode, Mathias Buchholz). He started his professional career in classical music as professor of viola and chamber music at the Maribor Music Conservatory, as well as a viola soloist with the Opera Orchestra in Ljubljana. The curiosity of the unknown and his innovative spirit soon led him to exploring various musical styles, learning other stringed instruments and composing his own music, from simple songs to scores for symphonic orchestras. He played with numerous big names of various musical styles, such as Vinko Globokar, Vladko Stefanovski, Neil Innes, Arvid Engegård, Renato Chicco, Simone Zanchini… He worked as production manager of the RTV Slovenia Symphonic Orchestra and the Jenaer Philharmonie. He was a member of the Terrafolk music group when they received the BBC World Music Award, and worked as a violinist soloist in the Canadian artistic theatre Cirque du Soleil. In 2005, he founded the ONE Music Society, committed to the equality of diverse musical expressions. In 2006, he founded the Symbolic Orchestra which brings together over 100 musicians from all over Europe and performs music in extremely diverse cultural environments. Since 2010, he has been intensively working in education of both beginners and professionals as a visiting lecturer but also within the Godalkanje programmes. He teaches elementary classes of violin in the fourth grade of the Waldorf Elementary School. When designing his methodology, he finds the biggest inspiration in self-taught musicians. He invented playful approaches to understanding musical theory, such as ‘Singing Ludo’, ‘Singing Bingo’, tablet applications and other puzzles. He likes to say: “I can only talk seriously to those who understand jokes.”

What:

TRAINING FOR VIOLIN TEACHERS

Understanding and actions in the first learning period, prior to reading notes.

Playing without notes does not mean excluding music theory. Understanding music theory allows self-taught musicians to perform music they acquired by ear on various instruments with a melodic, bass, harmonic or rhythmic role. With my students, we perform the technical placement on the violin consistently with very clear metaphors. Children are able to self-assess the correctness of a particular layout or technique and can thus seek the most suitable way for them to a relaxed play and a good listening control.

Which goals are more effectively achieved in individual, and which in group classes? I do not want to name my work as a new method, because harmful specifications are needed when defining and marketing methods. I wish teachers were flexible enough to be able to quickly write an etude or an exercise for their students, and not only use centuries-old exercises written by the best teachers of the time and intended for their disciples. This said, it is necessary to have clearly defined priorities. I put a strong emphasis on the child’s musical taste, immediate performances and the integration of music in their everyday life and other activities. You are invited to come meet swimming pools, jumpers, swimmers, airports, mountains, lowland, highways, wheels, fish, balloons and so many other fun accessories!
